Book-filled fun all day, every day

If you’re a Houstonian, you probably already know about Brazos Bookstore. For the rest, let us put this fantastically fun bookshop on your to-visit list.

Brazos Bookstore got its start in 1974, when it was founded by Karl Kilian. Kilian retired years later in 2006, at which point a group of 27 Houstonians purchased the shop. Over the past decade, they have ensured that Brazos has continued growing and sharing a love of all things books. It has become a thriving hub for book people, and it’s filled with beautifully curated shelves, celebratory window art, and enthusiastic staff ever ready with inspired recommendations.

When you’re in the market for a new book, look no further than Brazos. The booksellers have plenty of recommendations for kids and adults, which you can find online or in person at the store. (They’re also hilarious on Instagram). If you’re hoping to connect with other book people and find great new reads, The Brazos Book Club is the group for you.

Brazos Bookstore also has the best events on the block. If you’re looking for a book signing or are hoping see your favorite authors in conversation, check out the Brazos events calendar. Recent writer talks at the store have featured Jesmyn Ward (Sing, Unburied, Sing), Mohsin Hamid (Exit West), Tayari Jones (An American Marriage), and Luis Alberto Urrea (The House of Broken Angels), to name just a few. Don’t miss out: There’s always something happening at this Houston bookstore.

Readers in Houston can find Brazos Bookstore near Rice Village at 2421 Bissonet Street (between Kirby and Greenbriar/Shepherd), but if you’re not in Houston, you can still shop their book, audiobook, and gift offerings online. (In the realm of new fiction, I’d recommend The Ensemble by Aja Gabel and A Lucky Man: Stories by Jamel Brinkley.) Check out @brazosbookstore on Instagram, @BrazosBookstore on Twitter, and @BrazosBookstore on Facebook for book recommendations, event news, and other dispatches from the shop.
