Professional spearfisher and Youtuber Braden Sherron landed a whopper fish off Texas' Gulf Coast earlier this month. Sherron reportedly caught a 137-pound Cubera snapper spearfishing off Port Aransas back on June 3. The Port Aransas Fishermans Wharf shared photos of the "monster" fish on Facebook Friday. "Shout out to Braden Sherron with this pending Texas and WORLD RECORD BREAKING CUBERA SNAPPER!" the wharf wrote. "We are so thankful he chose Port Aransas Fisherman's Wharf to weigh and take pictures of this monster of a Cubera Snapper!" The International Game Fish Association's existing world record for the largest Cubera is 124 pounds. That record was set by angler Marion Rose near the Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary in 2007. The IGFA describes the species as the "giant of all snappers" clocking in at upwards of 100 pounds and more than four feet. While Sherron's fish outweighs the world record, the IGFA only recognizes rod and reel catches as legitimate. Spearfishing disqualifies his catch from contention. As Belleville News-Democrat points out, Sherron is likely in world record territory with the International Underwater Spearfishing Association, which has a current -122-pound record, set in 2006.
