Grab your girls and head to South Carolina.

Places like South Carolina’s dreamy Kiawah Island Resort offer packages and deals throughout the fall and winter. (FYI, rates tend to spike a bit around the holidays.) Jekyll Island Club Hotel’s Christmas package runs November 26-December 29; rates from $179.

If you’re looking for the perfect spot for a girls’ weekend away, consider Kiawah Island. Located only 21 miles from downtown Charleston, Kiawah Island feels like it’s a world away. The pristine retreat has everyone you want for a girls-only getaway from brunch spots to a peaceful spa to just-strong-enough cocktails and quiet places to get the church giggles.

Rent a private home or villa for some quality alone time or check into one of the island’s resorts if you want to be pampered. The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island is a Southern girl’s dream getaway with views of Kiawah’s beach, a property filled with160 mature live oaks, and a spa that offers oxygen-infused facials, clay-and-herb body wraps, and a “Southern classic” massage. Afterwards, grab a classic negroni or a Smokin’ Charlie cocktail with tequila in the bar. Recover from your trying day at the spa with a taste of the Lowcountry at the Jasmine Porch whose menu features twists on favorites like a fried green BLT and a fried chicken salad. (It’s a salad, so it’s healthy).

The island is ringed with miles of unspoiled beaches. Reserve a beach umbrella or chair in advance, and then spend the day on the sand at Beachwalker Park, catching rays while catching up. Watch dolphins frolic off shore and sandpipers and plovers monitor the sand. Pick up picnic supplies at Beaches and Cream or the General Store, or set up an oyster roast at Mingo Point.

The island hosts many cultural events, too, with musicians stopping by to play a few sets at the Turtle Point Clubhouse, the Seabrook Island House, or even the Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Check local listings to spend a night at piano bar or a local string quartet.

If you’re looking for outdoor activities (a.k.a. ways to burn off desserts), Kiawah Island has over 30 miles of bike paths. Rent a comfy cruiser at Seaside Cycles or Alligator Bike and tour the island’s beaches on two wheels. It’s an incredible way to really experience the island, whether you’re making a day of it and biking the full-length of the island, looking for local bobcats, alligators, and loggerhead sea turtles, or simply rolling over to the ice cream stand and shops at Straw Beach.

As you may have guessed from its name, the Kiawah Island Golf Resort is famous for its golf courses. While they may be hosting the 2021 PGA Championship on their Ocean Course, also known as “America’s Toughest Golf Course”, they welcome golfers of all skill levels. Play a full 18 holes or sign up for a lesson or two with a pro to see what the fuss is all about.

If you prefer your links to be of the sausage variety, head to Kiawah’s Town Center Market for the 2021 Breakfast Challenge. Competitors have to make their way through a sandwich made up of Nutella stuffed French toast, two types of ham (country and honey), American cheese, bacon, and sausage and all topped with two over-easy eggs and a drizzle of maple syrup. Remember: what happens on a girls’ weekend stays on the girls’ weekend.
