This North Carolina Town Gets The Holiday Spirit Early
Head to Beech Mountain
Picture a tiny mountaintop village blanketed with snow, kids sledding down a hillside, warm fires and hot coffee chasing the chill. No wonder Santa has his eye on Beech Mountain, North Carolina, earlier than most other towns. Peaking at just over 5,500 feet, Beech Mountain isn’t the highest rise in the South, but the town that shares its name lays claim to highest town in Eastern America. And its centerpiece is a ski resort that gets about 80 inches of snowfall in winter, supplemented by powerful snow machines. This Christmas, expect a giant ornament in the center of town, life-size displays created by local artist Susan “Susie” Knepka, and a December 15th visit by Santa and company at the 4 Seasons at Beech hotel. The Overlook Barn, high on a ridge in neighboring Banner Elk, has become a popular wedding venue. (During the summertime, Beech Mountain Resort becomes a downhill mountain bike park. But heavens to Betsy, let’s not bring up summer now that it’s finally cooling off). This destination’s true calling card is snow, snow, snow. Here’s a guide to all the fun things to do in Beech Mountain, NC:
