From the blues of Mississippi to Orleans jazz, The South is the birthplace of American music. With so many genres specific to our region like Cajun zydeco and Appalachian bluegrass, it’s no wonder that the South is home to so many iconic music venues and festivals. People travel from all over the world to visit Bonnaroo, New Orleans Jazz Festival, the Beale Street Music Festival, South X Southwest, and the Austin City Limits Festival. They also come to see live performances in places like Nashville’s Bluebird Café, The Ryman Auditorium, Preservation Hall in New Orleans, the juke joints of the Delta, the new Muscle Shoals Sound and the historic theatres dotted throughout our region. But most of all they come to see our deep devotion to songwriting, cultural expression, and sound that could only come from the South.
The South is Birthplace of the Blues, home to the Mother Church of Country Music, first source for the roots of rock ’n’ roll, and spiritual home to the beats of zydeco. Here are some of the best festivals and landmark venues that have set the stage for our favorite musicians.
