Recipe: Spaghetti Casserole

This easy, cheesy make-ahead spaghetti dish is well worth the wait. Just throw the ingredients in the slow cooker before guests arrive.

You’re hungry and in the mood for some classic Italian-American spaghetti with meat sauce, but when you open your refrigerator or freezer, all you see is ground turkey. Not ground beef, not ground pork. Just the ground turkey you bought on a whim, thinking you’d like to eat turkey throughout the year, not just that one day in November.

Instead of panicking - or going out to eat - make ground turkey spaghetti! Ground turkey is an easy substitute for both beef and pork, though know that because turkey is lower in fat than either of those meats, the end product will not be as full-flavored because of that.

Try this easy Turkey Spaghetti with Sausage and Peppers. It calls for one pound of turkey sausage, but you could use one pound of ground turkey and spice it yourself with fennel seed, basil, oregano, parsley, thyme, garlic powder, and even some hot pepper flakes, if you’re feeling like heating it up a bit.

Use ground turkey instead of ground beef in this Spaghetti Casserole. Wondering how to cook ground turkey for spaghetti? Simply use the same method you would with any ground meat. Cook it in a skillet, and in this recipe, with onion, until no longer pink. Cooked ground turkey will be white.

If you’d rather make a simple meat sauce separately and pour it over spaghetti, substitute ground turkey for ground pork in this Bolognese recipe. Or, if you do have Italian pork sausage on hand as well as ground turkey, consider doubling the recipe and using both meats. You can freeze the leftovers, insuring you won’t have to cook the sauce the next time you are craving spaghetti!

Sometimes, though, you don’t even have spaghetti noodles in the pantry. If there’s a box of lasagna noodles or even wonton wrappers, consider making this lasagna. It’s made with ground turkey and plenty of vegetables, making it a healthy one-dish meal.
