The Touching Ways Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Have Paid Tribute to Princess Diana Following Their Engagement News
The beginning of the week brought with it the news we'd ALL been waiting for – Prince Harry and Meghan Markle finally announced that they were engaged to be married.
The adorable couple – who had been dating for around 18 months – revealed the news on Monday morning, and went on to pose for photos in the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace.
But of course, one important person not present at the happy celebrations is Prince Harry's late mother, Princess Diana. However, it seems Meghan and Harry have been keen to include her memory in as much of the celebrations as possible – and have made numerous, sweet tributes to her since announcing their happy news.
The Sunken Garden, where the official photographs took place, was refurbished in Diana's honour, to mark the 20th anniversary of her death earlier this year. So the fact that the couple chose there to have their photos taken, is a poignant tribute to the Prince's beloved mother.
Following the announcement, the couple also took part in an official interview with the BBC – the only interview they'll conduct.
And it was then that Meghan and Harry revealed that his mother has been a key part of their thoughts during the happy time, revealing his belief that Princess Diana and his new fiancee would have been the best of friends.
When asked by presenter Mishal Husain what Diana might have thought of Meghan, Harry replied happily, "Oh they'd be thick as thieves, without question.
"I think she would be over the moon, jumping up and down, you know so excited for me. But then, as I said, she would have probably been best friends with Meghan."
And Meghan made sure to pay her own touching tribute to Diana during the course of the interview, admitting that she's also been at the centre of her thoughts.
During the interview, Harry admitted that it's on special days like today that he wishes his mother were around the most, saying "You know, it is days like today when I really miss having her around and miss being able to share the happy news."
But Meghan quickly hopped in to remind Harry that, with the sweet tribute to Diana in the engagement ring, "She's with us."
The engagement ring designed for his wife-to-be was another way that Harry made sure his mother was involved in the engagement.
The ring holds two diamonds at its side – both taken from Diana's own jewellery collection.
When asked about how it feels to have a ring including pieces taken from the late Princess Diana's own personal collection, Meghan revealed how special it was. She also revealed how she's been taking steps to connect with Harry's late mother in recent months too – by spending time with those she loved.
Meghan said, "I think everything about Harry's thoughtfulness is – and the inclusion of that and obviously not being able to meet his mom it's so important to me to – to know that she's a part of this with us".
"And I think in being able to meet his aunts and – and also like Julia and just different people who were so important to his mom, I'm able to, in some way, know a part of her through them and of course through him. "
Former Suits actress Meghan was referring to Julia Samuel.
Julia was a dear friend of the ‘People's Princess', and has since founded a charity, called Grief Works, based on her work as a psychotherapist.
She's also godmother to Prince George, and is still close to both Prince William and Prince Harry.
