Spoiler: The duchess's favorite children's book is a timeless tearjerker.

New mom Meghan Markle just gave birth to the seventh heir to the British throne, but it turns out her royal highness has more in common with us mere mortals than just a shared admiration for Prince Harry. News of the arrival of a royal baby boy made the rounds on Monday morning, leading us to unearth an old interview with the soon-to-be Duchess of Sussex, where she revealed her taste in children's books is similar to that of moms all around the world.

In a televised interview from 2016—one year prior to news of her royal engagement to Prince Harry—the then-actress answered a series of rapid-fire questions for Season 5 of the USA show, Suits, where she starred as powerhouse paralegal Rachel Zane. In the video, Meghan reveals her most recent Google search and the one item she can't live without, along with the one classic book she plans to read to her future children.

When asked "What children's book can you not wait to share with your kids?" the future Duchess of Sussex paused before providing a matter-of-fact response that immediately brought us back to our adolescence. Her pick: Shel Silverstein's The Giving Tree.

If the title sounds at all familiar, it's because you've definitely shed some tears over a copy of the poignant bedtime story at some point throughout your time as either a parent or child. Published in 1964, The Giving Tree extols the tale of a tree's ultimate sacrifice for a small boy, and the resulting narrative is one that's equal parts heartbreaking and remarkable. Silverstein's evocative short story has maintained its cult-classic status for over half a century, so it's no wonder that Meghan Markle is making room for the book on her baby's home library. Another children's book we'd like to read on the regular? Meghan's cheeky suggestion for her own kid-friendly book, aptly titled The Glorious Adventures of Freckle Face Meg. The childhood of the newest royal bundle of joy is bound to be anything but conventional, yet there's something oddly reassuring knowing that a member of the British monarchy has a bedtime read we can all relate to. If you have yet to read The Giving Tree for yourself, buy the short story ($17, for your own bookshelf, or pick up a copy for a mom-to-be in your life. (Just remember to add a box of tissues to your cart while you're at it.)
