The Original Cast of Little Women: See Them Then and Now
A reboot of the 1994 classic, based on Louisa May Alcott's novel about Civil War-era New England, will debut as a PBS miniseries May 13
Ryder was one of the '90s most iconic actresses thanks to leading roles in Reality Bites, Girl, Interrupted and Little Women, in which she played the beloved Jo March. While her work slowed at the turn of the century, though, when Ryder was arrested in 2001 at the Beverly Hills Saks Fifth Avenue and charged with four felony counts, including grand theft and illegal possession of prescription drugs. The actress was released on $20,000 bail and sentenced to three years probabtion, psychological and drug counseling, community service and had to pay a $10,000 fine. When Ryder completed her community service hours in 2004, a judge reduced her charges to misdemeanors. Ryder returned to acting in 2016 as worried mom Jocye Byers on Netflix's Stranger Things. The hit series is set to return for a third season. She also became the face of L'Oreal in 2018.
Sarandon played Winona Ryder's on-screen mom in the 1994 drama in the midst of a booming career that features starring roles in Bull Durham, Thelma & Louise and The Client. In 1996, the mom to Eva Amurri, Miles Robbins and Jack Henry Robbins won her first Oscar for Dead Man Walking. Sarandon went on to take TV parts in shows like Rescue Me, The Big C and Ray Donovan. Her recent turn as Bette Davis in 2017's Feud earned Sarandon Golden Globe and Emmy nominations.
After appearing in Empire of the Sun and Newsies, Bale played Amy March's husband Laurie in the adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's novel. The English actor truly broke out with his portrayal of serial killer Patrick Bateman in 2000's American Psycho. Bale also eloped that year with Little Women costar Winona Ryder's then-assistant Sibi Blazic. They've since welcomed two children: daughter Emmeline and son Joseph. Bale has also become known for playing Batman in Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, as well as his Oscar-winning performance in The Fighter. Next up, he'll star in Mowgli alongside Benedict Cumberbatch and Cate Blanchett.
The same year he starred in Pulp Fiction and kicked off a four-year stint on Mad About You, Stoltz turned up in Little Women as Meg March's love interest John Brooke. Throughout the 2000s, he appeared in a few short-lived TV series before finding his groove in Madam Secretary, which he also directed. Other directing credits include Glee, Grey's Anatomy and Nashville. In 2005, Stoltz married Irish singer Bernadette Moley and they welcomed daughter Catalina two years later.
Just after My So-Called Life premiered in summer 1994, Danes made her film debut as Beth March. She continued to appear on the big screen in Romeo + Juliet, Shopgirl, Les Miserables and The Hours. The actress headed back to television in 2011 with a starring role in Homeland. Danes has won two Golden Globes for her portrayal of a bipolar CIA operative. She married fellow actor Hugh Dancy in 2009, and Danes announced in April that they're expecting their second child later this year. The pair is already parents to son Cyrus, 5.

Following a reoccurring role on ER and appearances in Small Soldiers and The Virgin Suicides, the actress spent most of the 2000s starring in top romantic comedies (Bring It On, Crazy/Beautiful, Elizabethtown). She also joined the Marvel universe as the iconic Mary Jane in 2002's Spider-Man and its next two installments. Dunst took a more serious turn in FX's Fargo, where she met her now-fiancé Jesse Plemons on set. The pair, who got engaged in January 2017, welcomed their first child together, a baby boy, earlier this month.
Little Women's Friedrich Bhaer — Josephine March's husband — continued adding feature films to his resume, such as The Unusual Suspects, Spider and Ghost Ship. Starting in 2000, Byrne became a regular on TV with series like Madigan Men, In Treatment, Secret State and Vikings. The Irish actor married his second wife, producer Hannah Beth King, in 2014. He has two children from his first marriage to Ellen Barkin, which ended in 1999. Byrne will appear next in the comedy film An L.A. Minute.
Just before coming aboard Little Women as an older Amy March, the daughter of actress Bibi Besch was dating actor River Phoenix when he died of a drug overdose in 1993. Mathis reunited with her costar Christan Bale in American Psycho and scored a series of television roles on shows like Harsh Realm, First Years, Under the Dome and The Strain. Her 2018 projects include films You Can Choose Your Family, Clovehitch and Boarding School.
The New York City native remains best known for playing Meg March in the 1994 romance. Alvarado went on to do a series of TV movies before tapering off from acting in the 2000s. Her latest role came in 2014, when she appeared in an episode of ABC's Black Box. Even before leaving Hollywood, she told PEOPLE in 1990, “I lead kind of a quiet life. I just grew up that way.” Alvarado has two children with her husband, actor Robert McNeil.
