McDonald’s Will Give Out Free Bacon for an Hour on January 29
Put bacon on everything, if that's your thing.
While it's been a major part of (internet) food culture for years, McDonald's seems to be focusing on a big bacon push in 2019. With classic items set to feature new bacon variants by the end of this month, it feels like the fast food giant that's been out-baconed by many of its competitors is trying to make up for lost time by putting cured pork on everything.
And for a brief time on Tuesday, January 29, they kind of will be. That's when McDonald's is putting on what they're calling "bacon hour." Any order placed between 4 and 5 p.m. local time at a participating McDonald's location will come with a free side of applewood smoked bacon. Want to dunk a piece of bacon in your mcflurry? Go for it. Want to make that Filet o Fish edible? Bacon is there for you. The possibilities for bacon infusion are limited only by the scope of the McDonald's menu, the boundaries of your own imagination, and the promotion's one side of bacon per customer policy.
It's all part of an effort to drive home the point that yes, McDonald's really does have a lot of bacon now. "When we said there's no such thing as too much bacon, we weren't kidding," McDonald's manager of culinary innovation Michael Haracz said in a press release. "January 29, we'll be upping the bacon ante—the bac-ante, if you will—and celebrating this glorious food favorite like never before."
What's so special about January 29? Well, it's one day before McDonald's rolls out its series of new, baconified menu items. Among them are the Big Mac Bacon, Quarter Pounder Bacon, and Cheesy Bacon Fries. They're currently only slated to be available for a limited time, but that may change if McDonald's customers prove that they like bacon to a sufficient degree.
Will the offer of free bacon lead to McDonald's chaos on the level of the szechuan sauce debacle? Hopefully not, but you can bet that passing out complimentary pork will at least get a few extra customers in the door next Tuesday.
