Fourth Grader Makes a Heartbreaking Christmas Wish for a 'Happier Life'
If you look at a child's Christmas wish list, you might expect toys, new sneakers and maybe a bike. But one fourth grader's wish might tear at your heart strings, like it did to a Louisiana politician.
New Orleans City Councilman-elect Jay Banks picked out a wish list from the annual Angel Tree program at the local Dryades YMCA. His random selection was a fourth grader who had two items on their list, one of which completely shocked Banks.
The child asked for "new shoes" and "a happier life."
Banks wrote an emotional Facebook post with a picture of the child's wish, saying "this has to be one of the most frustrating things I have ever seen...I don't specifically remember much about the 4th grade but I do know I wasn't wishing for a happier life."
He added, "how can I help; why did I have pull this one? I'm perplexed and don't know what to do."
The Dryades YMCA Angel Tree provides gifts for children at James Singleton Charter School as part of their annual program. The post drew hundreds of comments of support for the child, offering everything from mentoring and afterschool programs to even more gifts.
