7 of the Country’s Fastest Growing Cities Are in One Coastal State
Can you guess which one?
Right about now, when the Nor'easters start overextending their welcome into the would-be sunny months of Spring, everyone is dreaming of the Sunshine State.
And according to a new analysis, lots of those dreamers are doing something to make their sun-soaked fantasies a reality.
Forbes recently released its 2018 list of America's Fastest Growing Cities, and while the Boise, Idaho, metropolis took top honors this year, something else was made clear: Lots and lots of people are also heading to Florida.
The Sunshine State had seven cities appear in this year's top 25—more than any other state—and coastal areas from the Gulf to the Atlantic are represented. Topping the list within Florida was the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford area (ranked at #4 overall), a region once known for Mickey Mouse and now a hotbed for young professionals thanks to its projected job and wage growth.
The Cape Coral-Fort Myers area came in next at #9, with the highest projected population growth for 2018 in the country, and on the state's east coast, West Palm Beach-Delray Beach-Boca Raton ranked #12.
Back on the Gulf side, the city of North Port—part of the Sarasota-Bradenton metropolitan area—showed the strongest 2017 job growth among the 100 largest metro areas in the country (though, the region ranked #13 in overall growth). Rounding out the list of the fastest growing Florida cities are the metro areas of Lakeland, Jacksonville, and Fort Lauderdale.

To determine the overall rankings, Forbes (working with Moody's Analytics) takes into account job, population, wage, and output growth of the 100 largest metropolitan areas in the country for 2017, as well as the projected growth of each for 2018.
Forbes hypothesized that one of the main reasons for the population boom in Florida is demographics—many coastal cities are seeing an uptick in senior transplants as more retirees seek out the Sunshine State (and these 10 beach towns in particular!).
