Cap’n Crunch Is Making Chocolate Cereal for Valentine’s Day
For the cereal romantics out there.
The countdown to Valentine's Day is officially on, so panic should start setting in soon if you haven't already made a dinner reservation and bought a gift. But if you find yourself completely at a loss on February 14th, a new, vaguely Valentine's Day-themed cereal can at least help you save face if there's a chocolate lover in your life.
That's because one of Quaker's signature cereals is adding chocolate to the mix to commemorate this Hallmark holiday. Cap'n Crunch's Chocolatey Berry Crunch is exactly what it sounds like: an attempt to replace whatever flavor those yellow squares (the things you have to put up with to get to the Crunch Berries) are supposed to represent with the less ambiguous taste of chocolate.
It isn't just the presence of chocolate makes this latest iteration of the famous Captain's cereal line a Valentine's Day-themed offering. Instead of the vivid rainbow shades we're used to, the berries in this bowl are monochromatic, offered in a shade of raspberry red. No word yet on whether or not that's actually what they taste like, but raspberry feels like a fruit that pairs well with chocolate at this time of year. An early review makes no mention of the berry's flavor, but desribes the cereal overall as "not nearly as sexy as the Cap'n wants us to think, but it's also far from bad."
Because it would be kind of weird to sell Valentine's Day-themed cereal all year, this box of chocolate and berries is available for only a limited time. It's been spotted early at Target (who seems to have a knack for putting out these limited edition cereals pretty early) and is probably already on its way to other retailers.
So if you're plotting a grand romantic gesture and hiding an engagement ring in a bowl of cereal for some reason, don't wait to get your hands on this special box of Cap'n Crunch. Hopefully it will go stale long before your current relationship does.
