This is the Cheapest Place to Travel In May
If you're planning a Memorial Day weekend getaway on a budget, there is one unlikely destination you can visit in May for a great value: Chora Folegandros, Greece. This is the cheapest place in the world to visit in May, according to data pulled by the global booking site Booking.com.
Unlike many seasonal travel deals, Chora isn't on sale because of heavy rains or other inconveniences. In addition to looking at pricing fluctuations, Booking.com also honed in on places where great prices were met with perfect weather, and a quiet local events calendar (so no surprise conferences or festivals boost the price of your stay).
As a result, during your cheap trip to Folegandros, the skies will be clear and the streets, beaches, and attractions will be quiet.
Chora — a small village on the island of Folegandros, in the Cyclades — is 66 percent cheaper during the last week of May than the peak yearly price. Between May and October, it's three hours faster to get to the unsung isle (travelers can take a 90-minute seasonal ferry, rather than a four-hour-long ferry ride from Piraeus). Many hail this Greek destination as the low-key sister of Santorini.
Here, you can book a room at the cliff-clinging Anemomilos apartments, which offer sensational views for only €150 (that's about $163) in the low season. By comparison, high season rates start at €270 ($294).
But for the very best panorama, you'll want to hike to the church of Panagia, which looks out across the entire archipelago.
