1. Chez Fonfon
Be sure to save room for an after-dinner treat when you dine at Chez Fonfon in Birmingham. You’ll no doubt be tempted by the entirety of the dessert menu here. If you’re in the mood for something extra sweet, order the dreamy and delicate Coconut Cake or the smooth and indulgent Chocolate Pot de Crème. Can’t choose? Try both. Renowned Alabama chef Frank Stitt and his wife, Pardis, opened Chez Fonfon in 2000, with celebrated pastry chef Dolester Miles crafting the sweets menu.
When it’s served, L’Opossum’s crowd-favorite dessert—the La petite mort au chocolat en flambé—is promptly set on fire, creating a delicious alchemy of creamy chocolate, black cherry compote, and flame. Another favorite from the Richmond-area restaurant’s dessert menu is an irresistibly classic apple tarte tatin adorned with buttermilk creme fraiche.
3. Commander’s Palace
New Orleans, Louisiana
From the flickering flame of the creamy Bananas Foster Flambe to the don’t-you-dare-miss-it-because-it’s-that-good Creole Bread Pudding Soufflé with whiskey sauce, there’s only one thing to remember when you’re dining at Commander’s Palace: Save room.
4. The Barn at Blackberry Farm
The enchanting dessert menu at this spot changes seasonally and is filled with fresh touches from the garden; the delicate sorbets and ice creams are studded with vibrant ingredients, and the delicious pies and custards are filled with in-season, locally grown produce.
San Antonio, Texas
Settle in with an order of Coffee & Donuts at Signature for a divine after-dinner treat. Another favorite dessert here is the über-chocolaty Kit Kat-style bar, a decadent confection that will have your table talking.
Miami Beach, Florida
The dessert menu at Argentinian grill Leynia is packed with decadent pairings, including dulce de leche with peach compote and white chocolate ice cream, hazelnut and espresso with chocolate, and lemon sorbet with champagne. Simply inspired.
7. Bern’s Steak House
There’s an entire room dedicated to desserts at Bern’s Steakhouse. The Harry Waugh Dessert Room concocts such delicacies as dessert beverages, flambé dishes, sundaes, and chocolate creations so delicious and complex, you’ll want to savor every bite.
8. Heritage Food and Drink
Waxhaw, North Carolina
Each season brought new desserts to now-closed Heritage Food + Drink in Waxhaw, North Carolina, where chef Paul Verica and pastry chef Ashley Bivens Boyd dreamed up delectable creations. Currently, Verica is moving to Charlotte, where he’ll open a new restaurant, The Stanley, this month.
9. Brigtsen’s Restaurant
New Orleans, Louisiana
Everyone should order their own desserts at Brigtsen’s. Why? They’re so delicious, no one will want to share. We’re partial to the buttery Pecan Pie with Caramel Sauce—it’s a downright delicious take on the Southern classic.
University City, Missouri
At this Latin-inspired cantina, you’ll find traditional Mexican and South American flavors infusing fan-favorite desserts such as the perennial favorite MO Rice Pudding with smooth mango, tart lime and a finely shaved foie gras torchon.
