This unique and refreshing take on the classic mint julep comes from Zero Restaurant and Bar at Zero George, a boutique hotel in Charleston, SC. Muddled fresh ginger adds hot and spicy undertones to the bourbon cocktail, while fresh strawberries add sweetness, brightness, and a bit of color. As is tradition, the drink is served over crushed ice in a stainless steel julep cup. The recipe makes one cocktail, but you can easily scale it up for Derby parties or other springtime gatherings. Simply muddle the ingredients in a large bowl, stir in the bourbon until combined, then strain into a pitcher.

How to Make It

Muddle together strawberries, sugar, ginger, and mint in a cocktail shaker until well macerated. Let stand 5 minutes. Add bourbon to mixture; cover and shake until well combined, about 30 seconds. Strain into a julep cup filled with crushed ice. Add sparkling water, and stir gently to mix. Top with bitters; garnish with 1 strawberry and mint.
