Although milk punch is a cold drink, it’s synonymous with the cozy holiday season in the South. This classic holiday cocktail is a Christmas tradition for many Southern families, who often serve it in place of often polarizing eggnog. It’s hard not to enjoy a drink that basically tastes like a boozy milkshake.

Our version of milk punch contains rum and bourbon, so your guests will be in the Christmas spirit in no time. This recipe contains very few ingredients, many of which you probably already have on hand during the holidays. Simply whisk together whole milk, heavy cream, bourbon, rum, and vanilla extract. Then, add homemade simple syrup to your desired sweetness.

Although it only takes a few minutes to whip up, this Christmas drink needs time to chill before serving. Put the ingredients together and throw your pitcher or punch bowl in the fridge while you finish getting ready for the party. When it’s time for the guests to arrive, your punch will be perfectly chilled. One of the best parts about milk punch is that it freezes beautifully after the party. A fun tip: If you don't thaw it out completely, you get punch slushies! We suggest making an extra batch so you can enjoy this perk for yourself, because we doubt you’ll have leftovers once guests have a taste.

Save your punch for enjoying alongside dessert or serve it to guests as they arrive for a sweet welcome. Although optional, topping each glass with freshly grated nutmeg makes for pretty presentation and a touch more holiday flavor. If you’ve never made milk punch, try it this year. We have a feeling it will become a Christmas mainstay in your home.

How to Make It

Whisk together first 5 ingredients in a large pitcher or bowl until well blended. Stir in Simple Syrup to taste. Chill the punch well (about 1 hour). Pour into highball glasses, and grate nutmeg on top, if desired.

Chef's Notes

Leftover punch freezes well. Even better, if you don't thaw it out completely, you get milk punch slushies!
