This cake is delicious! I followed the recipe except I also added 1 tsp espresso powder (King Arthur). I used King Arthur AP flour, Duke's mayo and Ghirardelli Dutch-processed cocoa. It was so moist, delicate yet not airy. Absolutely loved it!
Note: I normally use Hellmann's mayo but thought Duke's would work better. My grocery carries a pouch of Duke's that measures exactly 1 cup and I was able to avoid purchasing an entire jar.
This cake is absolutely amazing! It will be my go to recipe from now on! It’s moist thanks to the mayonnaise and it has the best balanced chocolate flavor. Do yourself a favor and make this cake asap!

This is a southern cake recipe that I have been dying to try. Just gotta pick up some more Duke's to make it truly southern. Swapping the hot water for freshly brewed coffee will bump up the chocolate flavor without tasting like coffee, unless you like the taste of coffee like me, so I will use espresso in place of the water. And I will probably swap the vanilla extract with chocolate and coffee extracts. Nothing makes chocolate taste more like chocolate than more chocolate. 🤷♀️
