When Erin and Kara of Blenders & Bowls moved to Austin, Texas from Hawaii, they fell in love with the vibrant spirit of the city. They also saw the perfect opportunity to open up a hip, trendy shop that'd provide a healthier alternative to traditional smoothies – and so their journey with açaí (pronounced ah-sigh-EE) bowls began.
The Brazilian superfruit has a ton of antioxidants, with a flavor that's been compared to blueberry and cherry with a hint of dark chocolate. Blenders & Bowls turns açaí berries into delectable smoothie bowls, and packs their treats with tons of fresh, delicious ingredients. The açaí café has been such a hit that the two friends just opened their second Austin location, and are opening a third in October.
Today, they've shared with us the recipe for The Original Açaí Bowl, which happens to be the perfect light and refreshing summer meal.
The Original Açaí Bowl
Note: For best results, use a high-powered blender. The key to making delicious açaí bowls is the thick consistency of the blend. Açaí can be found in the frozen fruit section at health food stores.
- 1 frozen banana diced
- ½ cup frozen strawberries
- 4 oz. almond milk/coconut water/juice
- 1 pack of açaí or Açaí Powder* (Optional to add nut butters, protein powder, greens, or supplements to the blend)
- ½ cup Organic Granola
- 1 handful of strawberries
- 1 ripe banana
- 1 tsp. Local Honey (Optional to add goji berries, bee pollen, or shredded coconut)
Preparation: Add ingredients to blender starting with the liquid. Make sure that your blended mixture is thick enough that if you were to turn the blender upside-down, nothing would come out. Scoop out the blend using a spatula, and place into your favorite bowl. Add toppings, starting with the granola, and follow with fresh fruit and a drizzle of honey. Enjoy!
*If you can’t find frozen açaí packs, try using powdered açaí. If using powder, you'll need less liquid.
