Native to East Africa. The coffee tree of commerce can be grown as a specimen or in shrub borders in the Tropical South; elsewhere, it's a handsome container plant for patios or large, well-lit rooms. Upright shrub to 15 feet., with evenly spaced tiers of branches clothed in shiny, dark green, oval leaves to 6 inches long. Small ( inches.), fragrant white owers are clustered near leaf bases. These are followed by 12 inches fruitsgreen when they rst appear, then turning purple or red. Each fruit contains two seedscoffee beans. Grow in rich, well-drained soil, and mist frequently. In spring and summer, feed with a complete water-soluble fertilizer every other week. Protect from frosts.
