Much ado about toilet paper.

While you might shy away from the topic of bath tissue, it's big business for warehouse giant Costco, to the tune of one billion rolls a year, per a 2012 CNBC segment.

But what makes the Kirkland Signature bath tissue so special? A ton of research going on behind the scenes, for one thing. "[T]he company hires technicians to test the toilet paper based on the three gold standards: thickness, strength, and softness," explains Ashley Lewis for Reader's Digest. "Merchandise managers often take tours of the toilet paper mills to check the water used in the production, paper quality, and humidity levels to ensure they're investing in quality for their customers."

According to that same Reader's Digest article toilet paper sales at Costco amount to $400 million a year, so the company has a good incentive to make sure its customers are pleased with the product.
