If Walmart’s recent addition of funeral potatoes to their grocery aisles had you reaching for your pearls, fear not. Despite its ominous name, funeral potatoes are hardly malevolent. In fact, they’re one of our favorite go-to casseroles.
Popular at gatherings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Western and Southern states, it’s a widespread tradition to serve this easy-to-make, easy-to-transport comfort food at post-funeral gatherings, which is how it got its name. It’s basically a hashbrown casserole with a purpose. Even Ree Drummond has a recipe for them!
In addition to shredded potatoes, most include cheese, a cream-based soup, onions, butter, and a flaky, crunchy topping, which is usually made of potato chips or corn flakes. Some include additions of ham or other meats. No matter how you make them, funeral potatoes are a guaranteed crowd pleaser—trust us.

Walmart’s prepackaged version is made by Augason Farms, which calls itself the leader in emergency food storage, and is available in 13.6 oz food pouches for $10.26 a piece. We can’t vouch for its taste, but it sure looks simple to make. Simply add water, top with cheese and pop in the oven until golden brown.
See? Not scary at all! And we have to give them bonus points for the “potatoes to die for” pun on the packaging.
