Tyler Perry Picks Up Grocery Bill for Seniors at More Than 70 Supermarkets in Atlanta and New Orleans

The surprise was such a needed beacon of light during this difficult chapter in history.

These days, we're amazed by all the people stepping up in big ways and small to help people amidst the coronavirus pandemic. From a Maryland first grader on a mission to deliver care packages to his elderly neighbors to Dolly Parton donating $1 million to Vanderbilt Medical Center to help fight coronavirus, celebrities and everyday people alike have been doing what they can to make a difference during these trying times.

In the latest of many, many examples of kindness we've come across in recent weeks, we're blown away by the generosity of actor, writer, and producer Tyler Perry. The New Orleans native paid for designated "senior hours" groceries at 44 Krogers in Atlanta and 29 Winn-Dixies in New Orleans on April 8th, per The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

"Senior and higher-risk Kroger shoppers in metro Atlanta did receive a nice surprise at the register this morning when they learned Tyler Perry had paid their grocery tab in full," Felix Turner, the Atlanta spokesman for Kroger, told the newspaper. "We would like to join our customers in thanking Mr. Perry for his kindness and generosity during this unprecedented pandemic. It was truly a pleasure to see our customers fill with joy and gratitude as the news spread throughout 44 stores across metro Atlanta."

Kroger also expressed their gratitude on Twitter, sharing praise for the star and saying "@tylerperry paid it forward and purchased groceries for nearly 3,000 senior shoppers today at Kroger stores across Atlanta. You can see how much this means by the look on their faces. Thank you, Tyler, for your generosity!"

Perry also gave back to his hometown of NOLA, eliciting many a smile from Louisiana senior citizens. As New Olreans' WDSU reported, seniors shopping at Winn-Dixie in Southeast Louisiana were surprised with a piece of paper that said "Random act of Kindness" and were gifted all their groceries for free. Winn-Dixie also took to social media to express their thanks and let Perry know just how much it meant:

We love thinking about the countless smiles that rippled across Georgia and Louisiana yesterday as a result of this heartwarming gesture. Thank you, Mr. Perry.
