The Top Names for Dogs and Cats for 2020

Did you adopt a pandemic pup or cat? You wouldn't be alone. As we all hunkered down at the start of the Covid-19 crisis, pet adoptions saw a giant increase. All of the working from home, schooling from home, and generally being at home created the perfect time for many families to add a furry friend. Trupanion, an insurance company specializing in medical coverage for pets, keeps a database of clients that includes pet names and they have noticed a new trend of monikers that are specific to the times. Since so many of us have welcomed four-legged members to our family during this pandemic, names like Corona, Rona, Covi, and even COVID are popping up on their lists.

Trupanion also surveyed its database of more than 530,000 dogs and cats and compiled lists for the top 50 dog names and the top 50 cat names of 2020. While none of those pandemic-inspired selections made the list, have a look below and see if your fur baby is represented.

Tips for Naming Your Pet

When choosing a name for your furry friend, you can choose to focus on personality⁠—is your dog or cat constantly on the hunt, clamoring for a good scratch between the ears, or lazy as all get-out—or on appearance—does your pet have long brown hair or short black hair, is she small or large, or is he lanky or a butterball? You could try out the name of your favorite four-legged star from a movie or book, or one that's simple and sweet to say. Whatever you pick, give the name some thought, as you will spend years calling for your fur baby.
