Thomas Rhett Just Debuted the Sweetest Song About Being a Dad—That He Wrote With His Dad

"When you get married he'll be your best man / pay for the booze and a bad cover band / and he'll give a long speech and say this was God's plan / try not to cry but he will."

With summer concert tours being cancelled across the board in the wake of the coronavirus crisis, many musicians have taken to social media as a creative outlet for their craft. Most recently, we're grateful to have been spoiled with a song debut from the ever-upbeat father of three, Thomas Rhett.

"Hey y'all, I meant to post this song on Father's Day, but I never got around to it," Rhett prefaces his acoustic performance on Instagram. "I wrote this song with my dad [singer and songwriter Rhett Akins], for my dad, and for all the dad's out there. So, better later than never. This song is called 'Things Dads Do.'"

As the title indicates, the hitherto unreleased song chronicles the beautiful relationship between fathers and their kin, especially sons. "Things Dads do / Like like he does when he ain't gotta clue / and I know it seems / like he's flying by the seat of his out-of-style jeans / you'll get embarrassed when he ruins your cool / when he pulls out on his camera on your first day of school / and that's just a few / things dads do," he croons in the mellow chorus, perhaps reminding us of the dads or father figures in our own lives.

"When you get married he'll be your best man / pay for the booze and a bad cover band / and he'll give a long speech and say this was God's plan / try not to cry but he will," he later sings, during a particularly moving verse, simultaneously making us emit a hearty chuckle while we tear up. Watch the full song below.

Here's to hoping we see this beautiful tune on a studio album in the future. And even more, here's to looking forward to the incredible day when fans fill up amphitheaters and Rhett and his dad have the chance to perform "Things Dads Do" for us live.
