What's written above above is the notation for a popular—and one of the oldest, dating back to at least 1490—opening moves in chess, The Queen's Gambit. It's also the name of your soon-to-be new favorite Netflix series.

Get excited for The Queen's Gambit, your next period drama obsession, arriving on Netflix October 23, and starring Anya Taylor-Joy in the lead role as a young orphaned chess wunderkind. The show also stars Marielle Heller, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Moses Ingram, Harry Melling, and Bill Camp. The forthcoming limited series drama is based on the eponymous 1983 novel by Walter Tevis, and takes place during the Cold War era, chronicling the life of the fictional Beth Harmon, who was abandoned at a Kentucky orphanage in the late 1950s.

Per Netflix's official synopsios, "[Harmon] discovers an astonishing talent for chess while developing an addiction to tranquilizers provided by the state as a sedative for the children," the statement reads, noting that she "...transforms into an impressively skilled and glamorous outcast while determined to conquer the traditional boundaries established in the male-dominated world of competitive chess." It's safe to say we can expect plenty of nail-biting drama in this show, with chess enthusiasts going to town with analyzing the games and strengths of the players' positions. For those chess novices among us, you'll likely enjoy the period costumes, cars, and sets—and you may even be inspired to sit down at the board and brush up on the game.
