The Real Reason Julie Andrews Isn't in 'Mary Poppins Returns'
Here's why the original Mary Poppins star won't be making a cameo in the sequel.
Though Dick Van Dyke made a cameo in Mary Poppins Returns, you won't find his co-star Julie Andrews in the soon-to-be-released sequel to the 1964 classic. But why?
As Variety reports, the movie's director Rob Marshall asked Andrews if she'd be interested in appearing in the film from the get-go, but Andrews didn't want to steal Emily Blunt's thunder. “'[Andrews] immediately said no,' Marshall said at the premiere of 'Mary Poppins Returns.'" the article in Variety shares. “She said, ‘This is Emily’s show and I want her to run with this. She should run with this. This is hers. I don’t want to be on top of that.'”

The article also reveals that while Marshall didn't press Andrews to consider any specific role, an insider source says there were hopes she may play the balloon lady, which Angela Lansbury ultimately took on in the hotly anticipated Disney sequel.
