"I couldn't run from this," Connie Simpson told "It was destiny. Nurturing and nursing were learned from both sides of my family."

Simpson, who her legion of devotees know as "Nanny Connie," might be Alabama's best-kept secret. From her humble beginnings in Mobile—the city she still calls home—Simpson has risen to the top of the nanny game. Over the course of her career, she's "bonded over beers and boobs" with Brooke Shields, cleaned up vomit with Robert De Niro, and snuck butter into the coffee of a breastfeeding Jessica Biel.

But she's still not impressed with celebrities. "Their profession chose them, just like mine chose me," she noted. "Hell, we're all human."

Simpson recounts these stories and more in her new book, The Nanny Connie Way: Secrets to Mastering the First Four Months of Parenthood. In her funny, no-nonsense way, she offers her priceless pearls of wisdom to non-celebrity parents, reminding them that it's all about confidence, and that they already have everything they need to be successful—no nanny required.

Her motto is: "Just be the parent."

"You're the parent," she told "You've got all the answers. It's just about having confidence. Not all parents have it right, but we learn from the mistakes we make."

Former news anchor and Fairhope resident, Amy Greer Thompson, is a proud member of "the sisterhood of Nanny Connie," and was one of the first to benefit from her expertise after the birth of her daughter in 1997.

Thompson told that Connie appeals to famous parents because "she's got loads and loads of Southern sensibility that I think is attractive to them. There's something about the Southern tradition of child rearing. We all nurture each other through play dates and preschool— it's how we connect as mothers," she added. "That's a gap Connie fills with a great big dose of normalcy."
