Party Like It's the 1920s in Montgomery This Year with These F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald Events

This year, Montgomery, Alabama, is ready to usher in the '20s by harkening back to the flapper era. The historic city on the Alabama River is inviting its visitors to do the same with a series of events centered around F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, who once called Montgomery home. In addition to Montgomery being Zelda's hometown, F.Scott penned part of Tender Is the Night and Zelda wrote part of Save Me the Waltz while they lived here.

"F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald perfectly captured the rollicking, tumultuous time known as the Roaring Twenties, and their literary works have stood the test of time," says Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce Senior Vice President Dawn Hathcock, in a press release. "We look forward to welcoming visitors to Montgomery in 2020 to celebrate the new Roaring Twenties and the lives of the Fitzgerald's with all the glitz, glamour and fun that their legendary lives inspired.'"

This spring, there will be a variety of events literary enthusiasts can attend in the Montgomery area to toast those glorious bygone days. First up, on March 9, Zelda will be inducted to the Alabama Writers Hall of Fame at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Then on March 24 through May 31, the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts will display oil paintings by Zelda painted at the end of her life, and several of her watercolor paper dolls as part of the "Zelda Exhibit."

At The Fitzgerald Museum, there are several more events Jazz Age aficionados should add to their radars. First, on April 3 from 4:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. there will be an open house with a small wedding-like reception to mark the 100th wedding anniversary of the couple with a talk from Dr. Kirk Curnutt on the new collection of F. Scott Fitzgerald's short stories, All of the Belles. On April 4, the museum will again celebrate the 100th marriage anniversary of the couple with an open house for visitors from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to enjoy. Then, on April 25, the museum will host their "This Side of Paradise" spring gala featuring a jazz band, food, drinks, a silent auction, and more, with tickets starting at $55.

If you can't make it to any of these events, The Fitzgerald Museum is still well worth visiting. First opened in 1989, the Fitzgeralds' one-time residence is also an Airbnb rental should you like some of the authors' finesse to rub off on you for the evening. While touring the museum, visitors can see F. Scott Fitzgerald's writing pen and books and some of the original furniture and decor from Zelda's childhood home. Other precious mementos include love notes between the couple and first edition copies of all of their books. Currently, there's a temporary exhibition of movie memorabilia from various film versions of The Great Gatsby.
