Mary Alice Monroe, New York Times bestselling author and South Carolina's queen of the beach read, has announced the impending release her first middle-grade book series.

In the first installment of in the two-book series, The Islanders, Monroe introduces a new generation of readers to the plight and beauty of the natural world through eleven-year-old Jake who is forced to spend a summer on tiny Dewees Island with his grandmother.

Living on an island with no cars, no stores or restaurants, and without cable or internet, Jake meets new friends Macon and Lovie, who help him discover a deep love for the island and the healing power of nature.

Monroe, who has dedicated her career to advocating for the Lowcountry and its environment, is the author of more than twenty books, including the Beach House series: The Beach House, Beach House Memories, Swimming Lessons, Beach House for Rent, and Beach House Reunion.

"The themes I hope all of my readers (young or young at heart) will remember most vividly from my books are those of awareness of what is wild and our connection to nature and each other," Monroe said in a news release.  "My long writing career and many books reflect my lifelong dedication to being an active and engaged conservationist. I attribute my success in part to the reader's engagement with the animals and characters in my stories. I can't wait for new middle grade readers to meet Jake, his grandmother, and my beloved loggerhead turtles."

The Islanders is scheduled to debut in hardcover, e-Book, and audio on June 15, 2021, and is available for pre-order now. Its sequel is set to publish in 2022.
