Typically, "cake shop owners" and "weight loss" don't go hand in hand. Not so for husband-and-wife duo Chad and Jennifer White.

The Tunnel Hill, Georgia couple have lost an astounding total of 220 pounds together with the help of the Lose It! app, making healthier eating choices, and being more active (no fancy boot camp-style gym routines here, folks).

"A little over a year ago my doctor told me that my A1C [a measure of blood sugar levels] was in an unacceptable range and said that if it got any higher I was going to become diabetic and would need medication for the rest of my life. That's when I decided to change my lifestyle and once I told my wife, we started looking into diet options," Chad shares with Southern Living. "After research and a few recommendations, my wife and I started the Keto diet and I promised my wife (and myself) that I would stick to it for a solid month and see what happened. I bought a glucose monitor and began testing my blood sugar and they were dropping — substantially. After two weeks the cravings for carbs and sweets had passed and I knew this was something that would work for me. My wife had walked every step with me and been such a huge support in the process."

Now, imagine sticking to a new healthy eating plan, all the while toiling away at a cake shop. Amazingly, Chad, and especially Jennifer, who handles the day-to-day of running her shop, Cup a Dee Cakes (Chad pitches in on nights and weekends) made it work. 

"Running a business with the shelves literally stocked with temptation can be a real challenge. We do taste what we create, but we try to keep it to a small sample to ensure that the batter or icing is right. The Lose It! app helps keep us honest, because we weigh and track all of our foods. Anything more than the tiniest bite to check for 'correctness' gets logged," explains Chad.

Of the lifestyle overhaul, Chad comments, "Food doesn't rule my life like it used to. I have so much more energy than before, and granted I don't work out as often as I should, but I am so much more active and energetic than before." Chad also cherishes milestones like buying his first "Large" shirt (as compared to his previous 4x size), and his first follow-up visit with his doctor after starting his new lifestyle to find his A1C was back in the normal range and most of his lab results were better than before.

His four tips for keeping the weight off for good? In Chad's words:

  1. Find something that works for you and stick with it.
  2. Don't think of it as a diet, consider it a "way of eating" — something that won't change.
  3. Don't let friends / family / life get in the way of your goals.
  4. When life presents you with temptation, weigh it against your ultimate goal. When I’m tempted to overindulge on sweets at work, chewing gum helps keep my mouth occupied.
