Ladies stateside know to steer clear of a few variants on the color wheel when selecting a dress for a wedding: white, ivory, or any shade in between. Kate seems to disagree, and we could not be more on board.

Earlier this morning, the Duchess of Cambridge made a relatively low-key appearance (all things considered) when she stepped out holding the hands of two picture-perfect mini members of the bridal party—one of which was an adorable Princess Charlotte. This was the second time Kate has been spotted since the birth of her third child, Prince Louis, just a few weeks ago.

If you blinked, you would have missed her quick jaunt up the steps of St. George’s Chapel, but in that short time, the Duchess might just have challenged one of the seemingly most important rules of wedding guest etiquette. Friends, Kate wore a dress in such a pale shade of yellow that it nearly passed for ivory.

Now, before we send the royal guard of fashion police on your favorite Duchess and ours, we must say Kate is certainly not in breach of royal wedding protocol, nor is this the first time she’s stepped up to that delicate line.

The pale yellow ensemble and coordinating fascinator was an inspired choice that perfectly blended with the ivory and green florals decorating St. George’s Chapel, while also worked with the fashions of the other royal ladies in attendance—most importantly, the Queen’s vibrant green (complete with a purple feather in her hat) and Camilla’s soft pink style. Working with the bride’s palette and the more senior women of the family (whether royal or not) certainly tops our list of best practices.

As for that other time Kate wonderfully dipped her fashionable toe in the more daring side of wedding guest attire, it was back in 2011 for the nuptials of Queen Elizabeth’s eldest granddaughter, Zara Phillips, and Mike Tindall. She wore a coat and dress combination that was somewhere between a pale yellow and soft gold. Whatever the exact hue, it was perfection. No surprises there.
