The past few years have been rough for Jo Dee Messina. In a recent interview with PopCulture, the country singer revealed that a cancer diagnosis, a separation from her husband, and financial struggles nearly drove her to rock bottom. Fortunately, a surprise visit from Jesus came right in time for the single mom of two.

"Jesus Christ walked onto my front porch and argued with me all day long," she said. "As real as I'm sitting in this seat, Jesus came to my front porch."

"I was at an all-time low. I was trying to sustain a career," Messina, 48, recalled. "I had a lifestyle and a family and everything, all on my own, and I couldn't do it. I couldn't. I was pulled way too thin and so, I was just standing on my porch one day, and Jesus Christ walked out and said, 'She's mine.' I just knew it, in the middle of that, in the middle of my spirit and my soul, I'm like, 'That's Jesus.'"

She admitted that at the time, she knew very little about Jesus, so she ran to her next-door neighbor and asked him to tell her more.

Messina said she became so enamored with her newfound faith that she recorded a gospel song, "Reckless Love," and even began including it in her shows.

Though the years that followed that epiphany haven't been easy, she said that her faith has never wavered. In fact, it's her faith that's sustained her.

"When you are going through a hard time in your family situation and you are diagnosed with cancer, and you don't know what's going to lie around that corner, and you have the arms of Jesus there, holding you," she told PopCulture. "You never want to walk away from it."
