After 63 years of marriage, four children, nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, it’s safe to say that Karl and Donna von Schwarz have been through a lot together. But this past year was especially rough for the high school sweethearts.

According to CBS News, after an open-heart surgery resulted in numerous complications, including a seizure and stroke, 81-year-old Donna was forced to spend most of  2018 either in rehab or the hospital.

"Grandpa never left her side," one of the couple’s granddaughters, Karly Gibbs, told CBS. "The rehab center brought in a chair where he slept every night until she was strong enough to come home."

Donna’s health troubles inspired Karl, 84, to make a recommitment of his love for her, and promised to buy her a brand-new engagement ring when she came home. Talk about motivation!

So, earlier this month, Karl wheeled her into a department store to pick out a diamond ring. Their family, who tagged along, encouraged him to make it official by getting down on one knee, which Karl was more than happy to do.

Luckily, their family had their cameras ready, and when the adorable moment made its way to Twitter, it quickly went viral.

"What in the world?" a giddy Donna can be heard saying in the cute clip shared by another granddaughter in Texas, Christina Von Schwarz (below).

Karl Von Schwarz told WFAA that there was nothing hard about renewing his love for his wife of 63 years.

"It was great because it's a gal that I've loved all of my life," he said. "It was very easy. You know we've been together so long that we can't stay apart really."
