Formulaic, cheesy, and downright delightful. You guessed it—we’re here to talk about Hallmark Channel Christmas movies.

Despite their unabashed predictability, this year, Hallmark Channel is churning out an unprecedented roster of 37 new holiday movies. And viewers can’t get enough. Quite frankly, neither can we.

Michelle Vicary, the network's executive VP of programming and publicity, told Glamour that a whopping 85 million people lay eyes on the network between Halloween and New Years. And the obsession extends far beyond television. Hallmark also offers smartphone apps, a custom tea and a Christmas radio station to go along with this season’s blockbuster lineup of original films.

So, what’s their secret? What keeps us tuning in?

Speaking with Glamour, Vicary said she credits it in part to the depressing 24-hour news cycle. "I think people can only take so much," she said. "We purposely look to be an escape. We try not to be issues-oriented in terms of creating polarizing conversations, because there are places to get that. We are a place that is a haven from that. We're just a different conversation."

Crown Media's CEO and president, William J. Abbott, theorized that current entertainment industry trends are also at work. "There are just very few options that are not shocking, looking to shock, or looking to be over-the-top in terms of violence or salacious for salacious sake,” he told Glamour. “I think people tire of that."

Similarly, Hallmark movies aren’t afraid to focus on the good parts about being human, no matter how cheesy. "The Hallmark brand is all about people connecting,” Abbot continued. “The secret, I think, to our success is that we focus on that relentlessly."

And if you noticed that the movies are getting, well… better, you’re right. Abbot revealed that Hallmark is investing a lot more money in them than they used to. "Our movies are so much better because our production value, our stars, our music, our scriptwriting, our development, and our production are so much better than they’ve ever been.”
