15 Organizations to Consider This Giving Tuesday

Hopefully you grabbed some great deals on Black Friday and Cyber Monday and your holiday shopping list is near completion. If there is anything left in your budget, we would like to point you in the direction of some worthy causes to contribute to on this Giving Tuesday. This year, as we are still in the throes of the coronavirus pandemic, more people are in need of a helping hand and the very organizations dedicated to doing just that are already stretched thin. They may not be receiving the level of donations they generally do, or they have already depleted their resources. Here are just some of the many non-profits that are in need of your donations. We’ve picked some large, national organizations that are able to help across the country, and some small, local organizations that are hard at work to make their communities the very best they can be.

Amor Healing Kitchen

Brighter Bites is a nonprofit focused on delivering fresh fruits and vegetables directly to families who may not otherwise have access to healthy foods. Desert Island Supply Company

Desert Island Supply Company, or DISCO as it’s known, is a small nonprofit based in Birmingham, Alabama, that offers free creative writing programs both after school at their facility in the Woodlawn neighborhood, as well as in school through their programs with area schools. Through these programs, DISCO serves nearly 700 students weekly and help them develop “writing skills, intensifying their intellectual habits and giving them the creative tools they need to explore and document their worlds,” as the website states. Lee Initiative Restaurant Worker Relief Program

The restaurant industry has been hit incredibly hard by the coronavirus pandemic. Shutdowns and closures have created a high level of unemployment for those in the service industry. The Lee Initiative Is providing relief for those in this industry. Help here.

This Charleston based nonprofit helps children fight obesity, gives them positive role models, and helps the whole family learn how to be healthier. Donate to their cause here.

Love Beyond Walls

Foundation for Girls is a nonprofit that “economically empowers marginalized young women and supports their children,” as stated on their website. To help this organization help young women in need, donate here.

Mercy Chefs

Mercy Chefs answer the call after natural disasters strike and provide chef-cooked hot meals to those directly impacted by the storm. Operation BBQ Relief

Operation BBQ Relief is another group that arrive in the wake of natural disasters to feed first responders and those directly affected. This group of competitive BBQ pit masters have found their calling beyond the competition field. Raising Men Lawn Care

Rodney Smith Jr. is leading the next generation of helpers to learn about service through his Raising Men Lawn Care. Smith has an army of young folks volunteering to mow the lawns of veterans, the disabled, the elderly, and even single mothers. You can help them obtain and maintain the equipment needed for their good deeds here.

Southern Smoke

Southern Smoke is a crisis relief organization for those in the food and beverage industry. Currently they are focused on serving those who’ve lost their jobs due to the pandemic. Help their efforts here.

Stand Up to Cancer

It’s likely that we have all been impacted by cancer. Someone we love has been impacted. The need continues for research and finding treatments and cures to protect us all. Stand Up to Cancer told Southern Living via email, “Even in a pandemic, there will still be nearly 5,000 people in the U.S. diagnosed with cancer every day, and we’ll lose one person to cancer every minute. Research has shown cancer patients are at a 3x higher risk of infection from COVID-19, and as an immunocompromised group, needs continued support right now. Stand Up To Cancer remains committed to serving the cancer community, and has developed resources to assist cancer patients and caregivers during this difficult time.” Donate here.

Two brothers from Louisiana created Tankproof to offer swim lessons to underserved youth. But in the wake of the coronavirus, Thurman and Torrence Thomas are serving meals and doing all they can to help their neighbors through this hard time. Donate here.

Chef Jose Andrès and his army of chefs are first responders in natural disasters as well as other events where people are in need of food. They have responded to the historic number of hurricanes and tropical storms this year as well as floods, wild fires, and helping those who have found themselves unemployed due to the pandemic.
