You can file this one away under things we never saw coming.

Jenna Bush Hager recently divulged a bizarre family secret during an episode of Today: her grandmother, former first lady Barbara Bush, only has four toes on each foot.

Hager and her co-host Kathie Lee Gifford were having a conversation about whether or not it's polite to ask guests to remove their shoes before entering your house when the truth slipped out.

"What if you have really, ugly, gnarly feet, and you've spent your whole life hiding them?" Gifford joked. "Do want to know the truth?" Hager asked in response. "My grandma is missing a toe on each foot."

Like us, Gifford was understandably shocked. "Barbara?!" she asked.

Hager elaborated, explaining that her 91-year-old grandma is in fact missing one toe on each foot—the second toe. "Ganny, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said it," she cried, clearly regretting the slip. "But it happened with age!"

As the news of the mysteriously disappearing toes spread, Hager clarified her comments in a statement. "Today, I spoke about my hilarious, strong, loving grandma's feet. She is indeed missing a toe or two," she wrote. "At an older age, she had a condition commonly known as hammer toes — toes that are too close together and crowd each other out. We don't talk about them often because it is mainly her kind heart and witty mind that we focus on!"

We still have a few questions, but we're happy to hear there's a reasonable explanation for her toe troubles!
