North Carolina Man Says His Dog Won Him $1 Million Lottery Prize
"He's my million-dollar dog."
Moises Duarte says he has his pet dog to thank for his $1 million lottery prize.
The Henderson, North Carolina, man was on his way back from dropping his Shih Tzu off at his sister's house in Durham on Saturday when he stopped at a nearby convenience store. At the Buy Quick Food Mart on West Cornwallis Road, Duarte decided to pick up a Red Hot Million scratch-off ticket for $10. He took the ticket back to his car to scratch and was shocked to discover that he'd won a $1 million prize.
"I couldn't believe it when I saw what I won," Duarte said in a North Carolina Education Lottery news release. "I kept looking at it and looking at it."
He told the lottery that he never would have stopped at the convenience store if not for his dog.
"He's my million-dollar dog," he said.

Duarte claimed his prize at the lottery headquarters in Raleigh Monday. He chose the lump sum, which means that after federal and state tax withholdings, he pocketed $424,503. He said he plans to use some of the money to get a new house and a purple Chevy truck.
Congrats to Moises and his lucky pup!
