This $1 Mother’s Day Gift Turns out to Be Worth $1.3 Million
Vielka Roman's Mother's Day celebration ended with the third largest jackpot in Carolina Cash 5 history.
Vielka Roman's Mother's Day was, by all accounts, an ordinary one. After enjoying a dinner out with her sister Neris and her fiancé Al, the trio stopped at the Carlie C's IGA grocery store on Cedar Creek Road in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
In honor of the holiday, Neris decided to buy Roman a lottery ticket. Treating her to a single Carolina Cash 5 ticket—Roman's favorite game—cost her sister just $1.
The next day Roman and her fiancé headed out for a short vacation in the mountains. On the way, she asked Al to check the numbers on his app.
Confetti filled the screen the moment he entered the five numbers. Realizing they had won, the pair immediately made a U-turn and rushed to Raleigh to claim their prize. But not before picking up Neris.
Their prize, totaling $1,354,174, was the third largest in Carolina Cash 5 history.
"I just can't believe it," Roman said in statement. "I'm still in shock."
After state and federal withholdings, Roman took home $958,078. She plans to use the prize to make life easier by paying off the house and her car.
"We just moved here, just bought a house," said Roman. "It will be nice to have room to breathe. Neris can have more time to plant in her garden. We will be able to spend more time with each other as a family."
