Their pastry chef won big too!
Congratulations are in order for Birmingham’s beloved Highlands Bar and Grill! After nine years in a row as a finalist for the James Beard Foundation’s award for the most outstanding restaurant in America, the Alabama spot finally received the prestigious distinction earlier this week.
AL.com reports that executive chef Frank Stitt and his wife and co-owner Pardis Stitt accepted the James Beard medallion at the awards ceremony in Chicago Monday. Highlands’ pastry chef of 35 years, Dolester Miles, also won big, taking home the well-deserved award for the most outstanding pastry chef in America.
Talk about a dream team!
According to the foundation’s website, the James Beard Awards, which are often referred to as “the Oscars of food,” bestow the outstanding restaurant award to “a restaurant in the United States that serves as a national standard bearer of consistent quality and excellence in food, atmosphere and service.” Only two of the previous 27 winners have been from cities other than New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles or New Orleans.
