Biltmore's Legendary Christmas Tree-Raising Goes Virtual This Year

We’re all invited to watch the 35-foot tree begin its Christmas journey.

One of the most beloved holiday traditions in the South is going virtual.

For many, Biltmore's iconic tree-raising is a spectacle that marks the beginning of the Christmas season, not just in Asheville, but across the country. This Christmas, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the pageantry will be shifted to the internet so revelers can tune in from the comfort and safety of their homes.

The Christmas at Biltmore: Virtual Tree-Raising is a free, online experience documenting the 35-foot Fraser fir's journey to becoming the seasonal centerpiece of America's largest home. The show will also offer a rare glimpse into the months-long planning and preparation that goes into pulling off Biltmore's legendary Christmas decorations.

This year, which marks the 125th anniversary of Biltmore's first Christmas, will be extra special.

"This milestone anniversary provides a new opportunity for Biltmore to share a closer look at this special day, with behind-the-scenes details, and stories from the people who make it happen," a news release notes.

Christmas at Biltmore: Virtual Tree Raising is set to premiere on Biltmore's Facebook page and YouTube channel at 5 p.m. EST on Wednesday, November 4, 2020.

For those determined to experience the magic in-person, fear not. Visitors can chose between two magical experiences: the Christmas at Biltmore Daytime Celebration house tour and the Candlelight Christmas Evenings nighttime house tour.

This year's Christmas at Biltmore will begin November 6 and runs through January 10. Guests on both tours are invited to enjoy Biltmore's world-class décor featuring more than 100 hand-decorated and styled Christmas trees, 25,000 ornaments, 100,000 holiday lights, nearly 6,000 feet of garland, 1,200 traditional poinsettias, and so much more.
