Betty White's Secrets to Longevity, in Honor of Her 98th Birthday
"I know it sounds corny, but I try to see the funny side and the upside, not the downside."
Happy birthday, Betty White!
Today, the seemingly ageless Golden Girl is celebrating her 98th trip around the sun. Now, if that’s not worth celebrating, we don’t know what is!
Over the course of eight decades in Hollywood, the beloved actress has earned a special place in the hearts of Americans. And fortunately, she’s showing no signs of slowing down.
As for the secret to her longevity, the eight-time Emmy winner has offered a few hints throughout the years. A self-proclaimed optimist, White told Parade in 2018 that her sunny outlook on life is “pretty much the same” as it has always been. She also credits her love for vodka and hot dogs, “probably in that order.”
“I know it sounds corny, but I try to see the funny side and the upside, not the downside,” she explained. “I get bored with people who complain about this or that. It’s such a waste of time.”
Perhaps it’s her mission to make people laugh that keeps her young. In 2010, then 88-year-old White became the oldest host in the history of Saturday Night Live. That same year, she was famously tackled in an iconic Snickers Super Bowl commercial. One thing's for certain: she's having a lot of fun.
“Enjoy life,” White told Parade. “Accentuate the positive, not the negative. It sounds so trite, but a lot of people will pick out something to complain about, rather than say, ‘Hey, that was great!’ It’s not hard to find great stuff if you look.”
Happy birthday, Betty! Here’s to another great year.
