As the Bush family and our nation continues to mourn the loss of former First Lady Barbara Pierce Bush, we reflect on her many contributions to society. From her kindness and eloquence to her passionate crusade for family literacy, her mark on our country is palpable.

When we think of this inspiring matriarch, we also recall her effortless elegance — especially her signature strands of pearls and white hair.

On the TODAY show in 2015, Barbara Bush explained her style choices to granddaughter, Jenna Bush Hager."The pearls are to cover the wrinkles, which they no longer do. You can't wear pearls all over your face," she joked. As for her decision to never dye her hair? "The white hair was because I wanted to play golf. I wanted to play tennis. I wanted to swim and my hair turned, as I'm sure someone else will tell you, orange, green, yellow, depending upon how much chlorine in the pool. So I decided to go white," she explained. Practical and beautiful, now that's an ethos we can get behind.
