An engagement ring marks the moment you and your partner decide to take a big step in your lives together. It also marks the spending of a considerable amount of dough.

And what's that price, exactly? While every couple is different and there's no "right" amount to spend on an engagement ring, it appears the national average is climbing up rapidly, at least according to a survey from the magazine Brides. In the outlet's annual Brides American Wedding Study 2018, 850-brides-to-be or newly married women were surveyed. After the results were tallied up, editors found that the average amount spent on engagement rings in 2018 was $7,829. In 2017, they found the average amount spent on engagement rings was $5,023, a difference of $2,806 in one year.

Of course, the sample size of the survey was relatively small and there could be socioeconomic variations — not to mention other factors at play — among participants between 2017 and 2018, but the findings certainly seem to indicate that couples are opting for increasingly pricey sparklers.
