American Girl of the Year is Headed to Infinity and Beyond!
Big news broke today, just in time to start that list to Santa for 2018! American Girl has revealed their 2018 Girl of the Year. Live on Good Morning America, Luciana Vega was introduced to the world. Luciana love science and specifically space. She wants to be an astronaut when she grows up and dreams of becoming the first person to visit Mars.
As reported by ABC News, American Girl worked with real life women involved in the space industry. Some of their collaborators include Dr. Megan McArthur Behnken, a NASA Astronaut; Dr. Ellen Stofan, former NASA chief scientist; Dr. Deborah Barnhart, CEO of the U.S. Space and Rocket Center; and Maureen O'Brien, the manager of strategic alliances at NASA.
The designers and developers at American Girl had these experienced women to lean on when creating realistic space expeditions for Luciana. The concept of having this doll aspire to a career as an astronaut is a deliberate move to steer young girls to develop an interest in STEM—science, technology, engineering and math.

"We've had STEM products before, but we really wanted to do a whole character to show girls that STEM is cool," Rebecca Dekuiper, a designer at American Girl, said in a video about Luciana.
While she has been introduced to the world, Luciana is not yet available for purchase. But she will be on January 1! Three, two, one, blast off!
