Joanna Gaines Loves Making This Plant-Based After-School Snack for Her Kids

When hunger strikes in the after-school variety, it's only minutes before the kids break into the pantry and start rip-roaring through bags of chips and sweets.
Instead, follow Joanna Gaines' lead and make a batch of "power balls," a recipe Waco's leading lady shared on her Magnolia blog here. "Here at the farm, I love a good snack that is fast and easy to make, but isn’t completely made up of high fructose corn syrup. I’ve been making these power balls for the kids and they love them and think they actually taste like cookie dough!" Gaines writes of the snack. "To make these things even better, they’re high in fiber and protein, which keeps my kids full until dinnertime and gives them an extra boost. And don’t let me fool you, I love these just as much, if not more than they do. With a busy schedule these are great to have on hand during the day when I need a pick me up."
The treat comes together with a handful of simple ingredients: old-fashioned oats, flaxseed, chia seeds, peanut butter, cinnamon, vanilla, and a few more. To keep it totally vegan, use agave syrup instead of honey and look for dairy-free chocolate chips. To make the snack more satisfying, Gaines recommends slipping in a tablespoon of protein powder.
