The summer season may be over, but that doesn’t mean you need to pack away your grill just yet. There are still plenty of warm fall days ahead and plenty of delicious reasons to keep that BBQ open all year long anyway.

There is, however, one downside to keeping the grill going day after day: The more you use it the grimmer it gets.

But, before you go out to buy expensive chemical cleaning products (or throw out your grill because you’ve lost all hope), know that there’s one little item you need to get a good scrub. And it’s probably sitting in your cabinets already.

And that product, our grill-loving friends, is aluminum foil.

The foil helps to get off all the little pieces of food you’ve left behind. And that’s important because that stuck on grime can have plenty of negative effects like sticking to whatever your cooking and cause a funky taste, or harbor germs that can transfer to your meal, or worst of all cause a fire flare up that could singe both your food and you.

To clean your grill with the foil trick you’ll need a few tools: A rag, a ball of foil, protective gloves, and some tongs.

As SFGate broke down, the first thing you’ll want to do is remove your grill’s cover and inspect above and below the grates for stuck-on debris. Next, make sure to cut off the gas supply to ensure no accidents happen.

Put on your work gloves to protect your hands, ball up a bit of the foil and start scrubbing away any easy to remove bits. The foil will act just like a steel wool scrub and cling to anything it touches. Wipe away any access debris.

Next, SFGate suggests to tear off enough aluminum foil to cover the top of your grill grates. Then, turn on the gas for the grill, set on high, close the top, and keep the grill on for about 20 to 25 minutes. This will allow for any baked-on grime to burn off.

Finally, brush off any left on debris and scrub once again with a ball of foil. And voila! You’ve got yourself a brand-new grill. Now, all that’s left to do is try out these fall grilling recipes on your sparkling grates.
