In a Reader's Digest piece, the HGTV Home Town duo shared the renovating mistakes they'll never make again. One genius tip that stood out? Always take pictures before you start a home renovation (and then again when you finish, of course). "It's such a pleasure to look back months, or even years, down the road and reminisce on a house that turned into a home," the couple said. What a sweet and smart idea — duly noted!

We also learned another surprising piece of intel from the notoriously crafty Napiers: They've learned over the years that it's important not to try and DIY everything on their own. "For larger renovations like layout or structural changes, electrical or kitchen remodels, you should enlist the help of a professional to make sure the job is done right the first time," the Napiers said, noting that Home Depot Home Services — which the couple has a sponsored partnership with — is a good place to start to find insured, licensed service providers in your area.
