The Coziest Winter Nail Colors for January 2022

The Coziest Winter Nail Colors for January 2022

The beginning of a new year often has us all feeling like starting off fresh by taking on better habits, getting rid of old ones, and—most commonly—changing up our look. While others are hitting the squats and going into the salon for a pixie cut, why not start slow and steady with a cozy winter manicure in a color that feels new to you? It takes only a little courage to step outside your usual OPI Lincoln Park After Dark or Essie Bordeaux, which is all you need to kick 2022 off on a fanciful foot.  From new wintry takes on classic dark nail colors to unique pops of color that'll have you feeling the opposite of boring, these are the best nail colors to try this January and tick off all the way into spring.

16 Kitchen Design Trends Southern Designers Predict Will Be Everywhere in 2022

16 Kitchen Design Trends Southern Designers Predict Will Be Everywhere in 2022

There's no denying how the pandemic fundamentally changed the world—including how we live (and work) inside our homes. An overall trend toward celebrating the history and originality of our homes is displacing ultramodern aesthetics and sharp lines as we all look to create cozier, colorful, more personalized spaces that better suit our lifestyles. We're turning away from big-box stores and toward vintage items—first, out of necessity due to supply-chain issues, and now, for design reasons—to add charm and character to every room in the house, including the kitchen. Here, interior designers from around the South share their predictions for what's trending in kitchen design for 2022 and beyond.

Saint Charles Avenue is one of New Orleans' most iconic streets—it's one of the main Mardi Gras parade routes, runs alongside the St. Charles Streetcar Line, is lined with gorgeous century-old live oak trees, and is home to some of the city's most stunning houses. One of those homes, this circa-1870 side hall shotgun, is currently for sale, listed by Alice McNeely for $2.275 million. The historic house still features so many original elements significant of that period, from the pocket doors to the plaster ceiling medallions, but has also been elegantly brought into the modern era. Look through the photos below to see all this classic New Orleans home has to offer.

The Exterior

Though it’s been updated and added on to over its 148-year lifetime, the front of the Italianate style house still looks the same way it did when it was built. The marble stairs, windows, and front door are all original, demonstrating how well this historic house has been maintained by its previous owners. With the overhanging oak branches, we couldn’t imagine a more idyllic NOLA setting.

Right through the front door is exactly what this house style is named for: A long, off-center hallway stretches nearly the length of the house and provides access to each successive room.

Living and Dining Rooms

The first room in the house is the formal living room, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows that look out onto Saint Charles Avenue and one of several stunning plaster ceiling medallions original to the home. A small sunroom juts out from the far side of the living room and—on the other side of the stately pocket doors—the formal dining room. The all-white color palette used throughout the home really emphasizes the height of the ceilings and draws your eye to the impressive millwork.

Don’t let the front facade fool you—at 4,600 square feet, this home has no shortage of living spaces to gather in. The current owner is responsible for the gorgeous interior design of the home, including that of this cozy yet elegant family room, which includes built-in cabinets and shelving, more floor-to-ceiling windows, and one of the home’s six fireplaces.

The Patio and Pool

The backyard (which technically is a side yard on this long, skinny property) is one of the most attractive features of this home. The lawn area includes a large patio space, flanked by well-established privacy landscaping, and a great pool that can be enjoyed nearly two-thirds of the year in New Orleans.
