A generation or two ago, we were much more driven by the local economy than now. If we didn't grow our own produce, we bought it at a nearby market, often from an area farmer. We lived in houses that were just big enough and close to work and the shops we frequented. The small towns where many of us lived offered cultural opportunities and a wonderful way of life. We knew how to slow down and enjoy ourselves.
Picture a place like that today―where you can walk and enjoy nature, where life is a bit slower, and where people know and help one another. Want to visit such a place? Want to live in such a place? Now you can.
Introducing the Southern Living Choose Your Home Giveaway. Beginning on March 23, 2009, you can enter to win a home for your family. And there's a twist: We're not giving away just any house, we're giving you the opportunity to pick one from four locations. To find out more about the sweepstakes and for official rules, visit southernliving.com/chooseyourhome or myhomeideas.com/chooseyourhome.
Our team, working with Web partner myhomeideas.com, found four locations that offer a great lifestyle and homes that showcase wonderful design. Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia, has long been a reader favorite because of its beautiful gardens and fun family activities. The cottage here is situated to take advantage of both. The South Carolina Lowcountry offers the casual lifestyle so often reflected on our pages. That's why we are building a cottage in Habersham, outside Beaufort, South Carolina. Those of you who love wide-open spaces should check out our house at Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas. And, if a mountain getaway is more your style, don't miss the retreat at Whisper Mountain, outside of Asheville, North Carolina. (The plans will be available in early 2009.)
